Fiji is an interesting surfing destination with pristine beaches with most locations only easy to get to via boat; The Fiji Islands has earned its trademark in the world surfing circuit as having some of the finest offshore reef breaks. There is surfing throughout the year in Fiji, you just have to discover it and like anywhere else cannot be guaranteed.

There are 2 best surf seasons in Fiji, with the finest swells pending from the southerly fronts initiating from low pressure systems that establishes in the Tasman Sea to the South of Australia. November to April is the best season to surf in Fiji because it can produce some of the finest reef breaks which is suitable for the experienced surfer.

The Fiji government has in effect, deregulated the waves. Fiji's 2010 "Surfing Decree" permits anyone to surf anywhere in Fiji waters. For instance, with the decree in place a visitor staying at a property on Viti Levu’s “Mainland” such as Seashell Cove or Matanivusi, can have the right to use the same breaks as people staying at Tavarua or Namotu.

Most of Fiji's surf breaks are strictly for experienced surfers. That's because most of Fiji's surf sites are reef breaks and which is not the best place for a beginner.

What is the weather like?

Between the months of May and October (“the dry season”), the weather is dry and the temperature ranges from 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F) and there are slight risks of tropical cyclones. Between November and April (“the wet season”) the weather is humid and hot, and it can rain endlessly for several days at a time. The climate also varies from island to island. As wet trade winds traditionally blow from the east, the eastern parts of the islands tend to be wetter and cloudier.

I am an experienced surfer but a budget traveller.  Is there a beach break within walking distance in Fiji or do I have to travel by boat for a surf?

Fiji surfing is mostly for the more experienced; there are not many beach breaks.
Fiji is in the tropics unlike Australia and California; most of the surf points are coral reef breaks if you want a good wave in Fiji, you have to travel by boat to catch that wave.

When’s the best season to surf in Fiji?

The Rainy season commences from November 1st through April 31st however when they do arrive, there is a good chance you'll see some of the cleanest conditions with light to dead winds just a caution beware of afternoon surfs during this time of year.  Typical weather patterns during this time see quickly forming low pressure storms out of the north which generate terrible surf conditions and make for a extremely rough and uncomfortable ride back to shore.

From May through October you see the trade winds come in and oversee the weather making for sunny perfect weather and predominant offshore winds at Cloudbreak and Restaurants.  Lots of these days it doesn't matter what time you start your day in the water.  It can be good all day long! Just make sure to bring enough water and sunscreen or the next day will hurt.

Will my US, Canadian or Australian insurance cover any medical expenses?

No, but it’s reasonably priced . (if you require air-evacuation due to extensive injury that A: will be expensive and you would most likely need travelers insurance to cover that!)
